The Sixth Floor Ensemble

A baroque orchestra and ensemble from Finland

Tästä orkesterin uusille kotisivuille - From here to the new pages of the orchestra

"The Sixth Floor" is a group of Finnish musicians specialising in early music performing in different compilations from a big baroque orchestra to small instrumental/vocal chamber ensemble. Founded in 1989, it has regularly given concerts in Helsinki and in the capital district of Finland and in several Finnish festivals (Kuhmo, Naantali, Hämeenlinna, Turku). Many of its biggest productions have been organised and broadcasted by the Finnish Radio, e.g. Bach: The Christmas Oratorio, Handel's and Purcell's Odes to St Cecilia.

Its members are active as well in other Finnish early music ensembles as in important Finnish Orchestras such as Radio Symphony Orchestra, The Finnish National Opera, Avanti! and the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra. Many of the players are also active abroad, taking part in the work of several internationally known orchstras such as La Chapelle Royale, Musica Antiqua Köln, The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, The Orchestra of the 18th Century and Tragicomedia.

The orchestra is also a ground organization for most of the early music ensembles working in Finland.
Battalia, Millennio, The Spirit of Gambo, La Compagnie Inégale and the recorder consort Gone with the wind are groups with a more or less unchanging personnel.

Under the name "Sixth Floor Ensemble" there has been performing a variety of ensemble combinations from violin-cello-harpsichord-trio to a group of twelve singers plus equal amount of instrumentalists. These smaller ensembles have given during the last five years over sixty concerts, not including the productions of Battalia, Millennio and others.
